Road trip to Vegas
Road trip to Vegas

It’s just not the people you bring along to a road trip that make the journey a success. Road trips rely on a number of things for them to be fun and memorable. This applies especially to a road trip on the long stretch of road from Los Angeles to Vegas that takes about 4 hours. There are many helpful tips you should keep in mind if you are thinking of a road trip to Las Vegas.

Plan the trip

Pick the right people to go with you on the road trip.  Pack lightweight clothing if you will be going during summer, or otherwise clothes appropriate for winter later in the season. Do not forget your saline nasal spray, hand lotion and sunscreen. If you are not planning on any stopovers along the way, carry enough drinking water and some snacks to keep you going in the 4-5 hour trip.  Another thing to think about is whether you, your friends, and the entire luggage will fit in your car. In terms of your vehicle choice, pickup trucks with two or three cabins may be a great option if you are looking for reliability and capacity.

Restaurants and motels

If you are not in a hurry, there are a number of restaurants and places to stay and dine between Los Angeles and Vegas. Delicious dining stops along the way include Dumpling House, Capital Seafood, Donut Man, In-N-Out, Lola’s Kitchen, Peggy Sue’s 50’s Diner and more. You can stop over at Barstow, which is just two hours from Los Angeles and two hours from Vegas. It has several motels, a variety of foods and many outlet malls.  Some people choose to catch a nap in motels located in Victorville. You may think that it is ridiculous for a person to stopover at a motel when it’s only a four hour journey, but the small detour people make on the way can take several hours.

Sites to make a detour to

You will see the Mormon Rocks-huge sandstone rocks- once you are off the freeway and are approaching the top of the pass. When you get to the main visitor center, you can hike on the trail and take in all the great views of the rocks.  You begin the hike from the Mormon Rock Fire Station. If these views don’t quench your wander-thirst, then remember to go to Valley of the Fire State park or the Bottle Tree ranch. Other great sites include the Zzyzx Road, the Mojave National Preserve, Eddie world gas station, Prim Valley Resort & Casino and more.

Visiting Las Vegas is a treat but don’t let the anticipation to reach the city deny you the chance to enjoy the art, desert landscapes and great eating spots along the way.  Just make sure you pack your bags right and fill the tank.
