Bagan temples

For tourist from Western nations, there are still places in the world that seem far away and not well understood. One of the most interesting is the ancient city of Bagan in Myanmar, which from the 9th Century AD to the 13th Century AD was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom. The most visible accomplishment of this kingdom was the construction of over 10,000 Buddhist Bagan temples, monasteries, and pagodas just along the Bagan plains alone.

Today, over 2,200 temples and pagodas are still around, many of which are stunning examples of architecture that still create awe and wonder in those who see them. An area known as the Bagan Archaeological Zone contains many of the larger temples and is arguably the most visited location in all of Myanmar.

Of the many incredible Bagan temples, there are a few that you should see if you get the chance. Although all Bagan temples are worthy of visiting, there are a few that really stand out.

Anada Temple

It’s not the largest, but it is arguably the most perfect of all the temples that still exist. It has a cathedral-like appearance and the great detail which went into the creation of the temple is still marvelous to behold. The hallways inside reach four cardinal points while the floor plan resembles a Greek cross. Just walking through the temple offers a rich experience when you consider the craftsmanship that went into every detail.

The largest of all Bagan temples, it was constructed under the reign of Narathu, a tyrant who only lasted four years on the throne. His efforts went into the construction of this massive temple which has a pyramid-shape, unlike all other surviving Bagan temples. Unfortunately, the exacting standards of Narathu, who would have a mason killed if a needle could be inserted between the bricks, led to his quick downfall. However, the temple itself still survives and is a testament to the constructive and architectural genius of the people.

One of the largest temples, this remarkable structure is over 150 feet tall and towers over the countryside. The red bricks that make up the temple creates a striking scene that must be seen to be believed. The incredible detail and many horizontal lines make this one of the most beautiful of all Bagan temples. Around the perimeter of the temple are many local shops that feature local artworks, crafts, clothing, and other products that take advantage of the tourist trade but are well worth checking out.

Completed in 1086 AD, this beautiful temple is both large and exquisitely constructed. So striking is the temple that it served as the basis for many other temples that were built throughout the countryside. The impressive tower at the top and beautiful colors make this a temple which is a must-see

There are many other Bagan temples in the region and if you are planning on visiting Myanmar, then you will want to make this area your first stop. The incredible designs and striking architecture make this one of the most remarkable places on Earth.
